Prisoners that were incarcerated here included Winston Churchill, as a young correspondent during the Anglo-Boer War; the Scottish socialist James Thompson Bain; Nongoloza Mathebula, the gangster who founded South Africa’s oldest prison gang; Daisy de Melker who poisoned two husbands and a son; the Foster Gang who robbed banks; and struggle icons Mahatma Gandhi, Chief Albert Luthuli, Nelson Mandela, Robert Sobukwe, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Ruth First, Albertina Sisulu and Fatima Meer to name but a few.
